The Jeans vs. trousers debate has been reignited in this weeks Style section of the NYT.
Reporter David Colman looks into the movement of more men preferring and opting to wear “wool, corduroy and cotton duct” instead of denim.
These new trousers can be dressed up or down. Indeed even the market has shifted forces. “According to NPD Group, which monitors retail sales and trends, sales of men’s jeans were down 1 percent in the 12 months ending in August — after years of rising steadily — while sales of men’s pants were up nearly 7 percent in the same period.”
More after the jump…
The dominance of the premium jean craze of the past few years barely but noticeably retreated as men opted for more pants. While jeans will hardly be going anywhere anytime soon (if ever), trousers have indeed made their presence known…in the Times, in the stores and in our wardrobes.
Some of the cuts and fabrics of these new trousers are so appealing that we opt for them even when jeans are acceptable. These trousers are more dressed up than denim but can still be casual and comfortable.
This in not to say that we’ll be throwing away our true blues. EFF THAT!
But this does give guys even more choices to embrace as they dress. Indeed, “as men grow more at ease articulating how they want to look, the limitations of jeans become clear: you are always that guy in jeans. What connoted rebel status in the ’50s and cool status in the late ’90s now merely looks safe.”
This also makes room for trouser cut denim which is set to take off.
