For Fall Winter 2008/09 Alexander McQueen presented a collection called “Pilgrim”.
Taking inspiration from his time traveling Nepal, India and Bhutan, we get the sense that McQueen was still traveling as his models marched down the runway representing the modern nomad.
The designer’s travels in Bhutan with it’s rich culture and traditions were reflected in the ornamental decorations on the clothing. It seems as if this were Himalayan culture meeting sartorial tradition. McQueen used color, texture and embellishment which convey social status and class in his referenced destinations.
Tightly belted jackets and knits wrapped around the models channeled the gho. The gho, a knee length robe tied at the waist, is national dress for Bhutan men and as such, is required by law of male citizens in public and formal situations.
McQueen paid homage to yak herders via long haired yak sweaters and scarves indicative of the bovine creatures native to the Himalayan and Mongolian regions.
We get the sense McQueen was tapping into a man who doesn’t settle down. Indeed some of the head dresses made us think of Genghis Khan, but we think McQueen’s nomad is much more peaceful.
