For Fall/Winter 2008-09 the Prada collection presented by creative director Miuccia Prada was a mixture of reality and theatre.
Pale skin models walked the runway in looks which mixed the masculine and feminine. The collection was based on pieces being mixed and styled in unseen ways. We’re talking double breasted jackets softly overlapped in feminine ways, powder blues contrasting with dark greys, collars atop of collars, satins and sheens being incorporated in suits.
Were our eyes really seeing skirts layered over trousers? Is that high waisted underwear peeking out above trousers? Wait…is that model carrying a clutch bag? Never mind that…do we see a halter top over those striped shirts and nude-tone knits? Are our eyes playing tricks on us?
No, it’s simply Miuccia using the runway as the setting of her drama where reality meets the incomprehensible. Maestra Miuccia used her presentation to leave her audience visually spellbound, if not just scratching their heads.
Was Miuccia telling us to never mind the finished looks, but rather adjust our eyes on individual pieces?
Well, whatever, we were drawn into her drama as the reality of wearable pieces emerged in the form of nipped waist jackets, well made trousers and fine gauge knits. As far as the sort of fabric color blocking technique goes, well, let’s just leave that in fantasy land this time.
