JA APPAREL WINS JOSEPH ABBOUD NAMESAKE LAWSUIT
-
The intense court battle between JA Apparel and designer Joseph Abboud has come to a conclusion. The court has ruled that Joseph Abboud has, “no right to use his name in conjunction with his new label Jaz and has forbidden the designer from employing the moniker in any way that would compete with his namesake brand, including advertising, marketing, labeling and personal appearances”.
This marks the end of a 10 month case which the industry have kept tabs on and a victory for Marty Staff and JA Apparel.
Abboud had previously sold his namesake line ‘Joseph Abboud’ in 2000 for $65 million. Terms of the sale stated that he could no longer use the trademark ‘Josheph Abboud’. He must try to appeal to consumers and retailers with his ‘Jaz’ while keeping an arms length from his namesake.
