We finally managed to snag a copy of the much anticipated July Italian Vogue (Vogue Italia) All Black Model Issue. This thing has been the holy grail of fashion for the past month and countless searches ended up fruitless. We’ve been trolling the city for a copy bumping into others on the same quest, always coming up empty handed…until today.
This issue has been FLYING off the newsstands and they had to do a reprint. So much for the belief that black models won’t move issues. Industry, please make note.
The magazine had four different covers featuring Naomi Campbell, Jourdan Dunn, Sessille Lopez and Liya Kebede. No matter which cover you get the other three models are still included in a pullout spread tucked on the other side of the cover.
The cover features the words “A Black Issue” suggesting a double meaning of the July issue featuring all black models and the issue at hand when it comes to blacks in the industry, or rather lack of blacks in the industry. Though after perusing the mag and seeing decidedly ubiquitous white advertisements, our office has coined the term “The Half & Half Issue”
The cover also includes a list of featured models: Alek Wek, Alva Chinn, Arlenis Soso, Chanel Inam, Gail O’Neill, Iman, Jourdan Dunn, Karen Alexander, Kiara Kabukuru, Liya Kebede, Noemie Lenoir, Pat Cleveland, Sessilee Lopez, Toccara Jones, Tyra Banks, Ubah, Veronica Webb, Yasmin Warsame and Naomi Campbell.
Just flicking through the issue we came across an article penned by Robin Givhan, fashion editor of The Wall Street Journal. We’re working on getting it translated to present to you.
Many of the photos are included below for your viewing pleasure.

a good look for black america
absolutely beautiful…………why does the world not see the exotic, deep and beautiful women of color and what they offer the world. Why can’t I find a copy of this magazine in the bookstores
I LOVE IT! I wish I can have a copy, GODDAMNIT!
The beauty of the black women comes in many shades and sizes. Bravo to Vogue magazine for show casing the black woman and her diversity of style. The girls from around the way need to recognize this issue is absent of hoochie because hoochie is trendy, common and easily replicated. Therefore, to the sistahs who think they have style take note Haute Culture means one of a kind, like this issue of Vogue!
I tried so hard to get a issue of july vogue been to at least 7 to 10 bookstores no luck and it’s not for me.it’s for my girlfriend who loves fashion.p.s still trying. PANAMA
Risa from Osaka Japan
I’ve been trying to get this beautyful issue but I can’t get it yet here in Japan is so hard to find I check internet but still difficult
Please I really got to have it!!! fashion is for ever
i dont know how my mom did it, but she found a copy an dhad itsent to me. it was pretty amazing. the articles as well as the photos i felt topped the past 6 American vogues, and i wish that these models were used more often. i feel that they gave a greater depth the fashion and modeling world. its a shame that there are so few black models out there to do that.
Like it?, Sure. But do I love it no. We represent beauty with out Vogues help. We have EBONY and ESSENCE that have represented the beauty and talent of all black men and women, models, designers, and artist alike. Why do we always celebrate when the white world finally accepts us for what we already knew existed as if they just discovered our beauty last night. It’s utterly ridiculous that the world…”Fashion World” has just woken up and gotten a clue that looking at sick, pale, food deprived, white girls is played out. But does that mean we should be chosen as 2nd best to increase their sales and help deepen their pockets? NO. Exposure?, yeah okay great!
It is an absolutely amazingly beautiful magazine. The best selling in the history of Italian Vogue… and they worried so.
However, to A Prescott… every single piece of this magazine was a black model…. every piece. Unfortunately, for Ebony and Essence, so many of the advertisements are white models. I understand why, that’s what the people paying the bills supply, but it drives me crazy. If you ever open up a Latina magazine, everything, from cover to cover, is a latin inspired. No non-latin models advertisements or pics and articles… period. We need to get up on it. We’re beautiful, we sell, and now we have the ultimate proof. And it’s funny that Italian Vogue took this chance. I’ve been to Italy, twice, and brown and black skin is not seen as beautiful. These editors put it on the line, and for that they get a hand clap!!!
Beautiful. O wow!!!!!!!! this magazines gives inspiration to black models and other minorities.
