ZAHA HADID x CHANEL 2.55 PAVILION DEBUTS IN CENTRAL PARK

by Kid A on October 21, 2008

Chanel has launched their Mobile Art tour in Central Park.

The exhibition is part of Chanel’s traveling event that presents a contemporary art container by architect Zaha Hadid.  Inside the Hadid created pavilion, 20 international artists exhibit work inspired by elements of Chanels iconic 2.55 quilted bag.  The bag is dubbed 2.55 since it was first issued in February of 1955.

The exhibition has since been the subject of debate of whether the installation is valid art or one big orgy of an ad for Chanel.

Look for the exhibition in Rumsey Playfield of Central Park (5th Ave. & 69th St.) from October 20th to November 9th, 2008.

Did not have tickets to enter but was allowed to wander around the Pavilion, which I found surprisingly unremarkable. The most amusing aspect were the Junior SS uniforms worn by the “phalanx” of security guards and the number of security cameras situated around the perimeter. The structure itself, seemed appropriately global, a generic form, inspired by world fairs, which is to say collapsible, modular and strangely unpersuasive as a bit of contemporary artchitecture—didn’t I see this in 2001 Space Odyssey or any number of Sci-Fi movies. As a photographic subject it is lovely to look at, but really an empty shell, both literally and figuratively.
Of course, it’s advertising, but what isn’t today? The question is whether it’s persuades people that the brand Channel is more interesting that the silly soap opera, “Coco Chanel” that played last month on Lifetime.
