Not long after buying a landmark house in Vermont designer Karl Lagerfeld is making the place home as he gets ready to shoot the new Chanel ad campaign there.

There is a strange and invisible borderline when fashion is not only fashion, but becomes the most evident and most easily visible expression of an area. Fashion as history is beyond fashion, and it is not only limited to clothes.
A new fashion can appear having the same origins in inspiration and admiration in the past of fashion. The danger is for us designers to be too exposed to the seduction of the past….It is difficult to work out your own vision of fashion without being haunted by the beauty of the work of the people before us - even if they were also not immune to all kind of influences and inspirations to achieve a strong vision and a unique style.

Karl Lagerfeld waxes poetic on male models and men in general in Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen’s new book Influence.

I like to work with models for a long time. Sometimes the girls change, but some girls I work with for years and years. With male models it is different. I hate working with male models.

And…

I don’t work with many men. I don’t want to ask the men about the fashion. Their opinion doesn’t interest me.

Karl Lagerfeld discusses the teddy bear collaboration he designed with German manufacturer Steiff:

How do you explain the fact that a man like you still refuses to give up his teddy?

I like animals very much — above all, when they are stuffed with cotton or plastic. It is the best way to be sure they do not bite, eat, smell badly or mess with your things.

Was it your idea to collaborate with Steiff on a teddy bear in your likeness?

Even if I seem unapproachable, in general people come to me, and not the opposite.

Steiff contacted my devoted director of communications, Caroline. One cannot call me. One must go through the nurse in order to see the baby.

Were you immediately seduced by the idea?

Instantly. It is everything that I love. I have already lent my likeness to a lead figurine and to video games. Why not a teddy bear?
